What Are Skills?
In OSRS, there are over 20 different skills to train. Each skill represents a different activity, and improving your level in that skill unlocks new abilities. Some examples include:
- Fishing – Catching fish for food or profit.
- Woodcutting – Cutting down trees to gather logs.
- Smithing – Turning metal ores into armor or weapons.
- Crafting – Making jewelry, armor, or decorative items.
- Cooking – Preparing food to heal your character.
- Mining – Extracting ores, gems, and other materials from rocks.
There are also more specialized skills like Runecrafting (making magical runes for spells), Agility (improving your movement around the world), and Fletching (creating bows and arrows).
How Skilling Works
- Leveling Up: Every skill starts at level 1 and can be trained all the way up to level 99. The higher your level, the more advanced actions you can perform (e.g., chopping better trees, mining stronger ores).
- Experience Points (XP): Doing an activity gives XP. For example, cutting a tree gives Woodcutting XP, and cooking fish gives Cooking XP.
- Rewards: As you level up, you unlock faster methods, better resources, and sometimes new ways to make money.
Why Do Players Skill?
- Profit: Many skills can generate money, like Fishing or Mining.
- Self-Sufficiency: Skills let you make your own gear, food, or supplies without relying on other players.
- Goals & Achievements: Reaching level 99 in a skill is considered a huge accomplishment.
- Relaxation: Skilling is often more laid-back than combat. Many players "AFK skill" (do activities that don’t need constant attention) while chatting or multitasking.
Skilling vs. Combat
Unlike combat, which involves fighting monsters and bosses, skilling is about progression through effort and patience. Some players prefer combat, some prefer skilling, and many enjoy a mix of both.
